Boycott of Simon Commission (1927): The Indian statutory commission also known as the Simon commission was appointed by the British Conservative government under Stanley Baldwin in November 1927. It is a 7-member Commission came to India to study Govt. Of India act 1919. The study would examine if the act was working fine and suggest the necessary changes. It had no Indian on the committee hence it was heavily boycotted by the Indian National Congress and other small political parties throughout the country. Prominent Indian nationalist Lala Lajpat Rai led a protest in Lahore. He suffered a lathi charge during the protest, and died of his injuries on 17 November 1928. In response to Simon commission, Congress declared total independence as goal. Indian History Chauri Chaura Incident-1922: The Chauri Chaura incident took place at Chauri Chaura in the   Gorakhpur district of the United Province,(modern Uttar Pradesh) in British India on 5 February 1922, when a large group of protesters, participating in the Non-Cooperation movement, clashed with police, who opened fire. The demonstrators retaliated by burning the police station. The incident led to the deaths of three civilians and 22 policemen.The British Government in response, imposed martial law in the area and arrested hundreds of people. Gandhi who was strictly against violence, withdrew the movement on 12 February officially. He also felt that adequate training was not provided to the people to show restraint in the face of violent attacks. In 1923, the British government constructed a memorial to the dead policemen.
