Boycott of Simon Commission (1927): The Indian statutory commission also known as the Simon commission was appointed by the British Conservative government under Stanley Baldwin in November 1927. It is a 7-member Commission came to India to study Govt. Of India act 1919. The study would examine if the act was working fine and suggest the necessary changes. It had no Indian on the committee hence it was heavily boycotted by the Indian National Congress and other small political parties throughout the country. Prominent Indian nationalist Lala Lajpat Rai led a protest in Lahore. He suffered a lathi charge during the protest, and died of his injuries on 17 November 1928. In response to Simon commission, Congress declared total independence as goal.
