Jallianwala Bagh Massacre(1919)

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, also called Massacre of Amritsar, incident on April 13, 1919, in which British troops fired on a large crowd of unarmed Indians in an open space known as the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in the Punjab region of  India killing several hundred people and wounding many hundreds more. It marked a turning point in India’s modern history, in that it left a permanent scar on Indo-British relations and was the prelude to Gandhi's full commitment to the cause of Indian nationalism and independence from Britain. On the afternoon of April 13, a crowd of at least 10,000 men, women, and children gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh which was nearly completely enclosed by walls and had only one exit. It is not clear how many people there were protesters who were defying the ban on public meetings and how many had come to the city from the surrounding region to celebrate Baisakhi, a spring festival. Dyer and his soldiers arrived and sealed off the exit. Without warning, the troops opened fire on the crowd, reportedly shooting hundreds of rounds. According to one official report, an estimated 379 people were killed, and about 1,200 more were wounded. After they ceased firing, the troops immediately withdrew from the place, leaving behind the dead and wounded. The Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore renounced the knighthood that he had received in 1915.

Netaji Subash Chandra Bose - The unsolved legacy

Bose was born in Cuttack, Odisha on January 23, 1897. He was a brilliant student who went to England to study — where he was also preparing for Indian Civil Services. He got selected in the ICS in 1920, but chose not to work for an alien government.

He came back to India at the time when the country was fighting for freedom against the British government. He met Deshbandu Chitranjan Das, the editor of newspaper ‘Forward’, and Bose became the editor later.After becoming the editor of Forward, apart from writing against the Raj, he organised a boycott in Calcutta during Prince of Wales’ visit. This landed him in prison.In January 1938, he became the president of the Indian National Congress. And at Tripuri session 1939, he defeated Gandhi’s candidate, Patabi Sitharam Iyer, to win a second term. However, he distanced himself from Congress after the party’s ideology didn’t match his own Bose believed India could attain freedom if they fought against Britain during World War II. Following his idea, he freed several Indian freedom fighters in Europe to form a Mukti Sena.The Azad Hind Fauz was formed in 1941 in Berlin and comprised of Indian prisoners of war from Europe and North Africa. In December, Japan marked the beginning of World War II in Asia after it attacked Pearl Harbour. The fall of Singapore during that time shook the foundation of British Raj across the world.
Meanwhile, the Indian freedom struggle was at its final round after Gandhi called for the Quit India Movement in 1942Amidst all this melee, just a few years before India became independent, Bose vanished. Japanese Domei news agency said Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose died on August 18 in a plane crash at the Japanese-controlled Matsuyama military airport in Taihoku (now Taiwan). The incident left many Indians in a state of shock and disbelief. Even after 75 years, the controversy surrounding the death of Bose refuses to die down. A few believe that he did not die during the accident. Other theories say that he spent his last days in Uttar Pradesh.

READING MATTERS

INSIGHT

Self awareness is a unique quality which is a key to be happy, contented and successful.

In a research, 95% of people answered that they were self aware. But after testing, only 10% of the people were actually self aware.

The book 'Insight' is all about self awareness which gives a clear view of an individual and helps one to grow as a better individual. This book is written by Tasha Eurich, a researcher and an organisational psychologist. She has written this book based on her own research.

We people easily get carried away by the recent things or sometimes we get wrongly influenced. This book deals with knowledge, emotional and behavioral blindness and helps us to be alert in the present moment and also helps to deal with emotions.

The most important thing which Tasha tells us is to  ask 'What ' instead of asking 'Why'. While asking 'What', most of our problems get easily solved.

We get enlightened by knowing ourselves. So take a look at this fascinating work to get a self insight.

(A)7:00 am
(B)8:00 am
(C)9:30 am
(D)6:15 am

ANSWER FOR LAST WEEK QUESTION

1)Answer: Option(C) 120 kmph

Solution:
Let the speed of the car be x kmph
Then, speed of the train = (150x/100) = (3x/2) kmph
So,(75/x)-(75/(3x/2)) = 125/(10x60)
(75/x)-(50/x) = (5/24)
x = (25x24)/5 = 120 kmph

2)Answer: Option(A) 5 kmph

Solution:
Let Abhay's speed be x kmph
Then, (30/x)-(30/2x) = 3
So, 6x = 30
x = 5 kmph.

3)Answer: Option(A) 4 years

Solution:
Let the ages of children be x, (x+3), (x+6), (x+9) and (x+12) years.
Then, x+(x+3)+(x+6)+(x+9)+(x+12) = 50
5x = 20
x = 4 years
Hence, Age of youngest child, x = 4 years.

4)Answer: Option(B) 16, 28, 36.

Solution:
Let their present ages be 4x, 7x and 9x years respectively.
Then, (4x-8)+(7x-8)+(9x-8) = 56
20x = 80
x = 4
Therefore, their present ages are 4x = 16 years, 7x = 28 years and 9x = 36 years respectively.

5)Answer: Option(A) 3

Solution:
Let the positive number be x.
Then, x+17 = (60/x)
x^2+17x-60 = 0
(x+20)(x-3) = 0
Hence, x = 3.
