The Chauri Chaura incident took place at Chauri Chaura in the  Gorakhpur district of the United Province,(modern Uttar Pradesh) in British India on 5 February 1922, when a large group of protesters, participating in the Non-Cooperation movement, clashed with police, who opened fire. The demonstrators retaliated by burning the police station. The incident led to the deaths of three civilians and 22 policemen.The British Government in response, imposed martial law in the area and arrested hundreds of people. Interesting Facts...

Why do you fall asleep after eating Pongal?

  Pongal, a South-Indian dish is made of moong dal which contains high carbohydrates and proteins       content.

 Tryptophan is an amino acid that promotes sleep and is found in small amounts in all protein foods (Milk, Chicken, Meat, Cheese, Eggs, and Fish). It is a precursor to the sleep inducing compounds serotonin and melatonin. Thus, for tryptophan to have a sedative effect, it needs to enter the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier. Since, tryptophan uses the same transport system as other amino acids, it has to compete against them to enter the brain.

 Although eating protein foods alone is unlikely to effectively induce sleep due to their insufficient tryptophan content, eating carbohydrates and protein in the same meal makes tryptophan more available to the brain. Carbohydrates removes all amino acids, except tryptophan from your blood. That means that tryptophan has no competition and can enter the brain easily, boosting serotonin levels which makes us fall asleep. Since, Pongal is enriched in carbohydrates and protein content, it induces sleep.

What makes the Poori swell?

      Wheat flour kneaded with water to get a homogenous paste. This flour is made into a poori and fried in oil heated to more than 150oC. This temperature is higher than the boiling point of water (100oC) and so the water (in liquid state) in the poori is converted into steam (in gaseous state) which occupies a greater volume. This results in the poori swelling up.

     One can see stream bubbles escaping from the oil before the poori is completely fried. Actually, only a small quantity of water converted into stream is trapped between the layers of poori. When the volume of the stream trapped exceeds a certain level, the poori bursts.

Why can’t we fry food with water instead of oil?

We can't fry food with water because its boiling point is lower than that of oil. Generally, all food materials contain certain amount of water. We fry food essentially to remove this water. For this, the food needs to be heated beyond the boiling point of water (100oC). If we use water as the frying medium, the water from the food cannot be removed as the medium itself gets vapourized. However, oil can be heated to more than 150oC without charring the food. Being non-volatile at this temperature, heat from the oil facilitates frying.

ANSWER FOR LAST WEEK QUESTIONS

1)Answer: Option(C) 35 hours

Solution:

Suppose pipe A alone takes X hours to fill the tank.

Then, pipes B and C will take (X/2) and (X/4) hours respectively to fill the tank.

So, (1/X)+(2/X)+(4/X) = 1/5

7/5 = 1/5

X = 35 hours

2)Answer: Option(B) 60 kg

Solution:

Volume of Water displaced = (3×2×0.01) m^3

= 0.06 m^3

So, Mass of man = Volume of water displaced × Density of water

= (0.06 × 1000) kg

= 60 kg

3)Answer: Option(B) 25 cm

Solution:

Total volume of water displaced = (4×50) m^3 = 200 m^3.

Rise in water level = (200/(40×20)) m = 0.25 m = 25 cm.

4)Answer: Option(C) 6400

Solution:

Number of bricks = Volume of the wall/Volume of 1 brick

= (800×600×22.5)/(25×11.25×6) = 6400.

5)Answer: Option(A) 14 years

Solution:

Let the son's present age be X years. Then, (38-X) = X

2X = 38

X = 19.

Therefore, son’s age 5 years back (19-5) = 14 years.
