DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM

What is Democratic Socialism?
Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary people can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives. Democracy and socialism go hand in hand. All over the world, wherever the idea of democracy has taken root, the vision of socialism has taken root as well. Because of this, many false ideas about socialism have created.
Why are there no models of democratic socialism?
Although no country has fully instituted democratic socialism, the socialist parties and labour movements of other countries have won many victories for their people. We can learn from the comprehensive welfare state maintained by the Swedes, from Canada’s national health care system, France’s nationwide childcare program, and Nicaragua’s literacy programs. They provided high quality family care, with community involvement in decision.
Doesn’t socialism mean that the government will own and run everything?
Democratic socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy. But they do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect. Today, corporate executives who answer only to themselves and a few wealthy stockholders make basic economic decisions affecting millions of people. Resources are used to make money for capitalists rather than to meet human needs. They believe that the workers and consumers who are affected by economic institutions should own and control them.

K.Kamaraj-Kingmaker in Indian Politics:

Kumaraswami Kamaraj was the founder and the president of the Indian National Congress, widely acknowledged as the “Kingmaker” in Indian Politics during the 1960s. Kamaraj was born on 15 July 1903 in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, to Kumaraswami and Sivakami Ammal. As a young boy, Kamaraj worked in his uncle's provision shop and during that time he began to attend public meetings and processions about the Indian Home Rule Movement. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre was the decisive turning point in his life- he decided to fight for national freedom and to bring an end to foreign rule. Kamaraj was imprisoned six times by the British for his pro-Independence activities, that added up to more than 3,000 days in jail. On 13 April 1954, Kamaraj became the Chief Minister of Madras Province. Kamaraj remained Chief Minister for three consecutive terms, winning elections in 1957 and 1962. Kamaraj strived to eradicate illiteracy. He introduced Midday Meal Scheme. He introduced free school uniforms to weed out caste, greed among young minds. Major irrigation schemes and industries with huge investments were planned in Kamaraj's period. Kamaraj died at his home, on Gandhi Jayanti day. Kamaraj was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1976.

ANSWER FOR LAST WEEK QUESTIONS

1)Answer: Option(A) 3/5

Solution:

Let the capacity of each bottle = 1

Total capacity of two bottles = 1+1 = 2

Quantity of milk in the first bottle = 1/2

Quantity of milk in the second bottle = 1/4

So, total quantity of milk in the two bottles = (1/2) + (1/4) = 3/4

Hence, the amount of water in the two bottles = 2-(3/4) = 5/4

Therefore required ratio of milk and water = (3/4)/(5/4) = 3/5

2)Answer: Option(B) (3/14) kg

Solution:

Let 1 kg of both the alloys is melted to form a new alloy.

Total weight of the new alloy = 1+1 = 2 kg

Tin is present only in the second alloy.

Weight of tin in the second alloy = 1*(6/14) = 3/7

Now, 2 kg of new alloy contains 3/7 kg of tin.

Therefore tin per kg of new alloy = 3/(7*2) = (3/14) kg.

3)Answer: Option(B) 4 cm

Solution:

Parallel sides of a trapezium = 6 cm and 10 cm

Area of trapezium = ½ (sum of parallel sides) × distance between the parallel sides

32 = ½ (6+10) × distance

32 = 8 × distance

Distance = 32/8

Distance = 4 cm

So, the distance between the parallel lines of a trapezium = 4 cm.
