TECHBYTES

Datafication is a technological trend that converts many aspects of our lives into data, which is then converted into information and realised as a new form of value. In 2013, Kenneth Cukier and Viktor Mayer-Schönberger popularised the term datafication .Until now, datafication was associated with the analysis of data-captured representations of our lives, but not on this scale. This shift was driven primarily by the impact of big data and the computational opportunities provided by predictive analytics.

Examples of datafication in social and communication media include how Twitter datafies stray thoughts or how LinkedIn and others dataficate HR. Alternative examples include aspects of the built environment, as well as design via engineering and/or other tools that link data to formal, functional, or other physical media outcomes. One example is data collection and processing for optimal control (e.g., shape optimisation).
