 TECH BYTES

Quantum computing is an emerging technology in the field of computer science today. While classical computers use 0’s and 1’s for every process, Quantum computers use qubits to represent data. 1 qubit can perform two tasks at the same time. 2 qubits perform 4, and 3 perform 8 tasks simultaneously, that is, a qubit can be in a superposition of one and zero simultaneously until its state is measured. This can be done by using two of the main principles of quantum physics, superposition, and entanglement. Superposition refers to placing the quantum information a qubit holds into a state of all possible configurations, while entanglement refers to one qubit directly changing another. Benefits of quantum computing include high speed, the ability to solve complex problems, and optimization. Today, computers of this type generally have fewer than 100 qubits. This technology reached a milestone in 2019 when a quantum computer completed a specific calculation in a sliver of the time a classical supercomputer would have needed to solve the same problem.
