Before seeing
environmentalism, what is environment?
Environment is
the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or
operates.
Environmentalism
is an ideology or a philosophy that concerns environmental protection and
advocates the preservation, restoration and improvement of the environment.
The key ideas of environmentalism is
better future, balancing the resources, controlling overconsumption
/exploitation of resources and conservation. In short we can say this as
sustainable development which meets the needs of the present without
compromising the needs of future generation.
The four
categories of environmentalism are
1. Environmental
science - which integrates the physical, biological and informative science to
study the environment.
2. Environmental
activism - This refers to the social movements which creates increased
awareness of various environmental issues. The environmental activism plays
major role in producing legislation to preserve and protect the environment.
3. Environmental
advocacy-Environmental advocacy is presenting information on nature and
environmental issues that is decidedly pompous and motivate its audience to
adopt more environmentally sensitive attitudes.
4. Environmental
justice- it is the equitable and meaningful involvement of local people.
We can say Environmentalism began as a movement in
1950's. After World War the economy was boomed which introduced new
technologies, atomic energy, pesticides, advancement in agriculture etc. This
economic progress led to pollution and environmental movements. People around
the world voiced to protect environment.
In India the environmentalism begin
with the Chipko Movement started by Sundarlal Bahuguna and Chandi Prasad in
Uttar Pradesh in order to control illegal cutting of trees. After that lot
movements such as appiko movement, silent valley movement ,save Narmada movement
etc., where came. When Indhra Gandhi came into power in 1980, a department for
environment was established. Later in
1985, environment ministry was founded. Since environment ministry tackles
climatic changeits priority was raised
and in May 2014 the ministry was renamed to the current title of Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change. After 1991, the Indian economy liberalized
and also environment continued to deteriorate . Now air pollution increased, lot
of forests declined, rivers got disappeared and groundwater aquifer levels
lowered. So let's start to conserve!
Environmentalism is a vision for a better
life!
If it fade's , the life in earth will be a

ENVIRONMENT IMPACT ASSESSMENT
Draft EIA(Environmental impact assessment)
In short, the new draft EIA 2020 is anti-environment and anti-people Act. Experts say it is a trick to regularise large-scale environmental violations. The authorities were earlier mandated to monitor projects for compliance with environmental norms every six months. “It has been now been proposed to relax the monitoring frequency to once a year,” said Kanchi Kohli, legal researcher at the Centre for Policy Researcher.“Shorter processing times pose both institutional challenges and the quality of participation.” According to environmentalist Vikrant Tongad: “The draft is a compilation of violations. The monitoring mechanism is faulty as the compliance report will be filed by the project proponents themselves. This will create a lot of room for discrepancies.
Loopholes in draft EIA 2020
The EIA new draft 2020 allows post-facto clearance. This means that even if a project has come up without environment safeguards or without getting environment clearances, it could carry out operation under the provision of the new draft EIA 2020.This is disastrous because we already have several projects that are running without EIA clearances. An example is the LG Polymer Plant in Vishakhapatnam, where the styrene gas leak happened on May 7. It was revealed that the plant had been running for over two decades without clearances. A similar incident was reported on May 27, where due to poor adherence of environment norms, the natural gas of Oil India Limited in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district had a blowout and caught fire. This caused severe damage to the livelihoods in the region rich with biodiversity.
If the government is not acknowledging the urgent need to come up with the environment and people-friendly laws, we must demand the parliamentary standing committee on environment and forest to take up the task. We don’t need more man-made disasters. The present EIA draft of 2020 needs to be challenged on keeping the core provision of doing an environment impact assessment before operation of a project, as well as disallowing any project without a proper EIA.
KNOW YOUR DAYS
July11 - World Population Day
World Population Day is observed
annually on 11 July to emphasize the awareness on the urgency and importance of
population issues. The increasing population has led to an increase in demand
for every industry which is the key reason for many problems like
deforestation.
July 12 - Paper Bag Day
Paper Bag Day is observed on 12 July
annually to recognize the importance of an invention of Paper Bag that we
mostly take it for granted.
17 July - World Day for
International Justice
World Day for International Justice is
observed annually on 17 July every year. It is also known as the Day of
International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day. This day recognize
the emerging system of international criminal justice.
DO YOU KNOW
Vinoba Bhave
In the 20th Century, a man
named Vinoba Bhave walked about seventy thousand kilometers for fourteen years
in India and received around Forty-Two lakh acres of land in donation for
landless farmers.
Vinayaka NarahariBhave was born on 11
September 1895 in a small village called Gagoji, Maharastra. He is one of
India’s best-known social reformers and a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. He
abandoned his high school studies in 1916 to join Gandhi’s ashram at Sabarmati,
near Ahmadabad. Gandhi’s teachings led Bhave to a life dedicated to improving
Indian village life. He was the founder of the Bhoodan Yajna (“Land-Gift
Movement”).
Bhave’s idea of the land-gift movement
was conceived in 1951, while he was touring villages in the province of Andhra
Pradesh, when a landholder offered him an acreage in response to his appeal on
behalf of a group of landless Harijans. He then walked from village to village,
appealing for gifts of land to be distributed among the landless and relating
the act of giving to the principle of ahimsa (nonviolence), which had been
adopted by Gandhi. According to Bhave, land reform should be secured by a
change of heart and not by enforced government action. His slogan, "I have
come to loot you with love. If you have four sons, consider me as the fifth,
and give me my share." Later, however, he encouraged Gramdan, the system
whereby villagers pooled their land, after which the land was reorganized under
a cooperative system.
He was given the honorific title
"Acharya" (teacher). Bhave was called by Gandhiji as "The First
Individual Satyagrahi". Vinoba Bhabe was the first person to receive the
Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1958. He was awarded Bharat
Ratna in 1983.
In November 1982, Vinoba Bhave fell
seriously ill and decided to end his life. He refused to accept any food and
medicine during his last days. On 15 November 1982, the great social reformer
passed away.

ANSWER FOR LAST WEEK QUESTIONS
1)ANSWER: Option(A) 2 miles/hr
Solution:
Let the speed of the stream be x
miles/hr. Then,
Speed downstream = (10+x) miles/hr,
Speed downstream = (10-x) miles/hr.
So, {36/(10-x)} – {36/(10+x)} = 90/60
{72x} × 60 = 90 (100-x2)
X2+48x-100 = 0
(x+50)(x-2) = 0
X = 2 miles/hr.
2)ANSWER: Option(A) 1 km/hr
Solution:
Suppose he moves 4 km downstream in x
hours
Then, speed downstream = (4/x) km/hr
Speed upstream = (3/x) km/hr
So, {48/(4/x)} + {48/(3/x)} = 14
X = ½.
So, speed downstream = 8 km/hr, speed
upstream= 6 km/hr.
Rate of the stream = ½ (8-6) km/hr = 1
km/hr.
3)ANSWER: Option(C) Rs. 648
Solution:
No of shares = (4455/8.25) = 540
Face value = Rs.(540×10) =Rs.5400
Annual income = Rs.{(12/100)×5400} =Rs.648
4)ANSWER: Option(C) 5.6
Solution:
Cost price of 1 toy = Rs.(375/12) =
Rs.31.25
Selling price of 1 toy = Rs.33
So, gain = Rs.(33-31.25) = RS.1.75
Therefore, profit % = {(1.75/31.25)×100}%
= (28/5)% = 5.6%
5)ANSWER: Option(B) 30
Solution:
There is a meal for 200 children. 150
children have taken the meal.
Remaining meal is to be catered to 50
children.
Now, 200 children = 120 men.
50 children = {(120/200)×50} = 30 men.

FACTS
1.You can hear a blue whale's heartbeat from more
than 2 miles away.
The world's largest animal's heart weighs about 400
pounds — approximately the size of a small piano.
2.Wimbledon tennis balls are all stored at perfect
room temperature.
All Wimbledon tennis balls are kept at 68 degrees
Fahrenheit because the temperature of the tennis ball affects how it bounces,
and all tennis balls must be kept as consistent as possible for competitive
reasons.
3.The entire world's population could fit inside Los
Angeles. The world's total population is more than 7.5 billion. And obviously,
that number sounds huge. However, it might feel a little more manageable once
you learn that if every single one of those people stood shoulder-to-shoulder,
they could all fit within the 500 square miles of Los Angeles, according to
National Geographic.
